Accomplishing Our Purpose
SEAC accomplishes its purpose by:
Assisting local school division personnel in developing long range plans for special education services;
Advising school division personnel, the School Board, and the community about issues related to special education;
Participating in the development of priorities and strategies to meet identified needs of students with disabilities;
Providing a voice for, and giving support to, parents of children with special needs; and
Presenting ongoing workshops and training for parents and others about special education matters.
Who Serves on the Committee
The SEAC seeks to have a diverse committee that is representative of the many disability categories and stakeholders who are a part of the Hampton community. Our Committee is comprised of:
Parents or family members of students with disabilities.
Persons with disabilities.
Representatives from community, civic, or business organizations.
Representatives from human service agencies providing services for persons with disabilities.
An HCS teacher.
Except for the one teacher member, none of the voting SEAC members are school division employees. All members are volunteers who serve without compensation. Additionally, the Special Education Director serves as a non-voting consultant to the Committee; at times, others may also serve as consults to the SEAC.
Interested in serving? Submit a completed application to the SEAC Chair or Secretary.
Committee Meetings and Who May Attend
Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) meetings are open to the public, and anyone in the community who has an interest in special education is welcome to attend. Information is shared during each meeting regarding the current status of special education programs in Hampton City Schools. In addition, SEAC meetings are a great opportunity to network with other parents, voice concerns and/or celebrations regarding your experiences with the HCS special education programs, and hear informational presentations.
All meetings are held in the Ruppert Sargent Building, 1st Floor Veterans' Conference Room, One Franklin Street, Hampton, VA 23669.
*If schools are closed due to inclement weather, the meeting will be cancelled. Please call (757) 727-2400 to confirm meeting dates/times.
Parents and citizens are welcome to contact members of SEAC, provide written comment to SEAC, or give public comment during SEAC meetings. The designated public comment period is an opportunity to share successful educational experiences and express general concerns regarding educational issues for students with special needs. The SEAC requests that any expressed concerns be general in nature that deal with global issues rather than a comment about with a specific personal matter or situation. The Committee suggests that concerns about personal situations be addressed directly to the appropriate Special Education Coordinator.
Public comments are limited to three (3) minutes, and the Committee would appreciate written copies of public comments that include contact information. Public comment forms are located on the table near the door at the SEAC meeting.
Anyone with a disability who needs accommodations in order to attend or participate should call (757) 727-2400 seven (7) days prior to the meeting so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
